The Palm Beach Cardinals are the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, operating out of Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. The Cardinals have been a St. Louis affiliate since 2003, when the team was founded and replaced the Potomac Cannons (Carolina League) as the Cards Class-A Advanced team. The team began play in Roger Dean Stadium in '03, a move that corresponded with the Florida Marlins replacing the Montreal Expos (Washington Nationals) as the shared Spring Training partner of the complex with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals play in the 12-team Florida State League and are in the Southern division along with the Bradenton Marauders, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Fort Myers Miracle, the St. Lucie Mets and the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Cardinals won their first FSL championship in 2005, defeating the Lakeland Tigers 2-1 in a best-of-three championship series.
Palm Beach shares its minor league home with the Jupiter Hammerheads, which have been in Roger Dean Stadium since it’s opening in 1998. Roger Dean Stadium is also the only complex in the country to host more than one MiLB team and is the only venue in Florida to host two MLB teams for Spring Training, with the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals (previously Montreal Expos) calling Jupiter home for their preseason training. The complex, which has a capacity of just below 7,000, features luxury skybox seating, two levels of permanent seating and a wide array of concession and merchandise venues. Both the Marlins and Cardinals also have six practice fields, batting cages, full clubhouses, advanced conditioning centers and personnel offices used for Spring Training.
The Palm Beach Cardinals are owned by the St. Louis Cardinals, making them one of only a handful of MiLB teams directly owned by their parent club. The team is operated by Jupiter Stadium Ltd.
Notable alumni of the Palm Beach Cardinals include Chris Duncan (2003), Jason Motte (2004), Brendan Ryan (2005-08), Colby Rasmus (2006, ’08), Jaime Garcia (2006, ’09) and many others.
