Hot Stove Gala
The 50th Anniversary Hot Stove Gala, presented by Tecate and ABC 30, took place on February 3rd, 2011 at the Fresno Convention Center New Exhibit Hall. This year's special event featured Giants legends Matt Williams and Jim Davenport, former Grizzly, current Giant and World Champion Sergio Romo, Grizzlies manager Steve Decker and Giants bullpen coach Mark Gardner. The Giants World Champions Trophy also made a special appearance at the event.
The Annual Hot Stove Gala is the unofficial kick-off event for baseball season in the Central Valley. Hot Stove dinners have been a time-honored baseball tradition dating back to the beginning of the game. The formal program is highlighted each year by an awards presentation as honors are presented to baseball and softball standouts from throughout the Valley. Categories include Male and Female Player of the Year, Team of the Year, and Coach of the Year. The Al Radka award, celebrating an individual that has made a contribution to the community through the game of baseball, was presented for the 10th time at this year's Hot Stove. Mr. Radka himself started the Fresno Hot Stove over 50 years ago and the award was created as a testament to his vision.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Grizzlies Community Fund. The GCF was created in 2004 to assist, reward, and support community outreach initiatives. The GCF developed and continues to manage "Wild About Reading", one of the largest educational initiatives in professional sports, as well as the Grizzlies "Swing For Kids" program and the "Junior Grizzlies", a baseball league for athletes with special needs.
