Coaching Staff

 

MARTY MALLOY - Manager
Born: Gainesville, FL… Resides: Trenton, FL… Former infielder. Joined the Phillies player development staff for the 2017 season as Lakewood's (A) manager. Spent the previous five years (2013-16) with the Houston Astros, including three years as the manager for their Gulf Coast League (R) team, one year as the GCL hitting coach and one year as the Florida Instructional League coordinator. Also coached at the amateur level as head coach (two years) and volunteer assistant (six years) for Trenton High School and six years as an infield instructor at Gatorball Baseball Academy in Gainesville, Fla. Played 12 years (1992-2003), including his first eight in the Atlanta Braves minor league system.

NELSON PRADA - Coach
Born: Maracay, VZ… Resides: Barquisimeto, VZ… Former catcher. The 2017 season is his fifth season on the Phillies player development staff. Prior to the Phillies, had spent his entire professional career - playing and managing - with the Minnesota Twins. Was originally signed by Minnesota as an amateur free agent in 1995 and played four years (1995-98) before being released during spring training in 1999. Immediately began his coaching career following his release. Was Minnesota's Venezuelan Academy coordinator for three years (2001-03) and also managed the VSL team in 2001 and 2003. Spent 2004 as a coach with the Gulf Coast League Twins (R) before moving into the manager's role for the team, which he held for the next three years (2005-07). Managed Beloit (A) for five years (2008-12) before joining the Phillies as manager for Williamsport (A) in 2013 and Clearwater (A) in 2014. Joined Lakewood (A) as a coach for 2015. Has had winning records in six of his nine seasons as a minor league manager.

BRIAN SWEENEY - Pitching Coach
Born: Yonkers, NY… Resides: Clifton Park, NY… Former pitcher. Joined the organization prior to last season as a coach for the Gulf Coast League Phillies (R), his first year as a coach at the professional level. Was originally signed by the Seattle Mariners in 1996 and spent eight years in their minor league system until making his major league debut in 2003. Pitched in 73 major league games and went 4-2 with two saves and a 3.38 ERA between the Mariners (2003 & 2010) and San Diego Padres (2004 & 2006). Spent three years in Japan pitching for the Nippon Ham Fighters. Has a BS in biology from Mercy College.

TAKAYUKI SAKURAI - Athletic Trainer
Born: Ishioka, Japan… Resides: Ishioka… The 2017 season is his 10th with the Phillies and fourth with Lakewood (A) after spending three years (2011-13) with Williamsport (A). Worked three years (2008-10) as an athletic training intern in the Phillies minor league system. Earned a bachelor's degree in athletic training from the University of Delaware in 2007 and a master's degree in athletic training from Indiana State University in 2008.

JACOB BUNCE - Strength & Conditioning Coach
Born: Rochester, NY… Resides: Rochester… Joined the Phillies player development staff in 2016. Previously spent a year in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system with Billings (A). Worked as a strength & conditioning coach for various entities, including PowerCore Athletics, Verizon Wireless and Penfield High School. Earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science and kinesiology with a minor in biology from State University of New York.
