Coaching Staff



Born: 9/18/83 in Salt Lake City, UT… Resides: Palm Harbor, FL… Former infielder. Promoted to Lakewood (A) prior to last season after managing Williamsport (A) in 2014, his first season as a full-time member of the Phillies player development staff. Also spent April of 2014 as a fill-in bullpen catcher for the Phillies. Served as a player/coach for Williamsport in 2013. Played four seasons (2007-10) in Tampa Bay's minor league system while also playing independently in the American Association (2006), Can Am League (2010-11) and Atlantic League (2010 & 2012). His father, Jimy Williams, managed the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox and was the Phillies bench coach for two years (2007-08).


Born: 2/22/76 in Maracay, VZ… Resides: Barquisimeto, VZ… Former catcher. Joined the Phillies organization for the 2013 season after spending his entire professional career - playing and managing - with the Minnesota Twins. Was originally signed by Minnesota as an amateur free agent in 1995 and played four years (1995-98) before being released during spring training in 1999. Immediately began his coaching career following his release. Was Minnesota's Venezuelan Academy coordinator for three years (2001-03) and also managed the VSL team in 2001 and 2003. Spent 2004 as a coach with the Gulf Coast League Twins (R) before moving into the manager's role for the team, which he held for the next three years (2005-07). Managed Beloit (A) for five years (2008-12) before joining the Phillies as manager for Williamsport (A) in 2013 and Clearwater (A) in 2014. Joined Lakewood (A) as a coach for 2015. Has had winning records in six of his nine seasons as a minor league manager.


Pitching Coach Born: 6/13/74 in Yonkers, NY… Resides: Clifton Park, NY… Former pitcher. Joined the organization prior to last season as a coach for the Gulf Coast League Phillies (R), his first year as a coach at the professional level. Was originally signed by the Seattle Mariners in 1996 and spent eight years in their minor league system until making his major league debut in 2003. Pitched in 73 major league games and went 4-2 with two saves and a 3.38 ERA between the Mariners (2003 & 2010) and the San Diego Padres (2004 & 2006). Spent three years in Japan pitching for the Nippon Ham Fighters. Has a BS in biology from Mercy College.

TAKAYUKI SAKURAI - Athletic Trainer

Born: 10/31/83 in Ishioka, Japan… Resides: Ishioka… The 2016 season is his ninth with the Phillies and third with Lakewood (A) after spending three years (2011-13) with Williamsport (A). Worked three years (2008-10) as an athletic training intern in the Phillies minor league system. Earned a bachelor of science in athletic training from the University of Delaware in 2007 and a master's degree in athletic training from Indiana State University in 2008.

SCOTT SMITH - Strength & Conditioning Coach

Born: 4/19/84 in Spartanburg, SC… Resides: Milledgeville, GA… Joined the Phillies organization for the 2016 season. Previously held the same position in the minor league systems of the Marlins (2014-15), Padres (2011), Rays (2010) and Nationals (2009). Also spent three years (2012-14) as strength and conditioning coach for all sports at Georgia College & State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science and master's degree in human performance.
