Founding Partners of the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation:
A complete overview of what we are hoping to achieve with our new initiative:
The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation
When the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club, led by Jake Kerr, Jeff Mooney, and Andy Dunn set out to develop our Foundation, the goal was simple; help as many of our local youth find self-confidence, hope, improved health, and a skill set that will help not just on a baseball diamond, but in life.
What began simply as a vision to provide underprivileged youth with an opportunity has now become much more. The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation (VCBF) has already begun the process of helping local children grow into student/athletes who can now focus on succeeding instead of concerning themselves with elements that are usually out of their control.
From helping a young child onto a baseball diamond perhaps for the first time, right through to helping a bright minded student find a way to continue their post-secondary education, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation is committed to our community and wants to ensure that your involvement helps redefine a child's perspective on the game of baseball.
With a staff and volunteer base solely committed to our vision, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation will make a positive and lasting impression on many young lives thanks to your support.
"These children will become our legacy, and we feel there is no better place to learn life skills, teamwork, and compassion than as part of a committed effort focused on cultivating our youth to be leaders in our community."
Providing local youth in need with the opportunity to play ball through a summer mini league
The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation (VCBF) believes that every child has the right to play ball regardless of conditions that are beyond their control.
VCBF, in association with the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC, are bringing more than 300 children from across the Lower Mainland to the historic Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium to play ball for the first time.
Over a seven-week period, a total of six games will be played in an atmosphere that promotes collaboration and a spirit of fair play. Children, who might not have an opportunity to play baseball otherwise, will be coached and mentored by local sports personalities and community figures. They will receive free equipment they get to keep (glove, bag, helmet, etc.), free meals, free transportation to and from the stadium as well as a weekly 'talk' by an elite level athlete or inspiring leader geared to promoting self esteem and leadership skills.
The mini league will consist of two divisions. All children ages 6-8, will be in the “T-Ball” division while all children ages 9-11 will be in the “Coach-Pitch” division.
"Winners get to the top and turn around to see those they have defeated. Leaders get to the top and turn around to help others achieve the same."
- Dan Churches
Hosting of a marquee Provincial Premier Baseball League Championship
There is no doubt that the province of British Columbia has become a hotbed for future baseball stars. With scouts and coaches from both the amateur and pro ranks focusing on the Lower Mainland for the next baseball star, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation will host an annual Premier Baseball League Championship. This multi-team tournament will bring together the top players from the best teams in British Columbia for a week at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium for all to see.
Perhaps it is here that a scout will find the next Rich Harden, Jason Bay, Jeff Francis, or Larry Walker.
Donation of a Scholarship to the University of British Columbia Baseball Program
The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club and University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Baseball Program have had a long standing relationship that for nearly a decade has included the use of Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium for both regular season and playoffs games.
Now the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation wants to further commit to the Thunderbirds by providing a scholarship to be used by the program to find a local student/athlete and allow this person the opportunity to continue their post-secondary education at UBC while developing their skills on the diamond.
"Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months, and years they spend preparing for it."
- T. Alan Armstrong
