Roster There was hope that Chris Carter would be ready to grab hold of a Big League job by now, but a sluggish start to his MLB career hasn't helped that cause. He'll need to put together a monster spring to prove he's capable of everyday DH duties if he wants to land on the A's roster. Full Story Alumni In 2002, former River Cats pitcher Barry Zito won the American League Cy Young Award with the A's, posting a 23-5 record and 2.75 ERA. That season, Oakland used a 20-game winning streak and general manager Billy Beane's innovative "Moneyball" strategy to win the American League West Division title. Entering 2012, the A's roster is full of former Raley Field stars. Tops among the list are catcher Kurt Suzuki, second baseman Jemile Weeks, shortstop Cliff Pennington and pitcher Dallas Braden. Top prospects such as first baseman Chris Carter, outfielders Michael Taylor, Jermaine Mitchell and Grant Green and pitcher Graham Godfrey are also on the verge of making an impact at the next level. |
The March 31 exhibition game marks the first time a Major League team has played in Sacramento since the River Cats hosted the A's on March 29, 2007. Since the River Cats' inaugural season in 2000, the team has hosted eight Major League games: the River Cats have played the Oakland A's (2001, 2003, 2006, 2007), San Diego Padres (twice in 2001), and Colorado Rockies (2004), while the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners faced off in an exhibition game at Raley Field in 2003. The River Cats begin their 2012 regular season on Friday, April 13, against the Reno Aces. The opening series is a matchup of the 2011 PCL Pacific Conference Championship Series when the River Cats overcame a 2-games-to-0 deficit to win the five-game series. The River Cats have won 10 division titles in 12 years, the most of any major, American professional sports team this century. |
