Big Bats in Late Innings04/09/2009 10:24 PM ET
Jupiter FL- The Palm Beach Cardinals shutout the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-0 on Opening Day at Roger Dean Stadium. What looked to be a pitchers duel through the sixth inning turned into an offensive eruption for the Cards in the bottom of the seventh. Both Nick Derba and Curt Smith hit the long ball in a four run inning for Palm Beach.
The big story of the night came from the bat of Shane Peterson who went four for four with two RBI and one run scored. Peterson is coming off an impressive 2008 season for the Batavia Muckdogs where he hit .291 with 39 RBI and 20 doubles (tied for 2nd most in the league). This landed his spot on the 2008 New York-Penn League All-Star team.
The Cardinals pitching staff was solid giving up nine hits and no runs. The key to their success was their ability to get out of jams. Turning two double plays and Tommy Pham's outfield assist to the catcher, Derba, played vital rolls in the shutout.
The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 pm at Roger Dean Stadium. Tickets are still available.
