Hush Puppies Added as "Wild Card" Entrant10/08/2009 1:00 AM ET
By Richmond Pro Baseball
RICHMOND, VA - Richmond Professional Baseball has announced that the Richmond Hush Puppies has been selected as the "wild card" entry and additional candidate in the contest to name the Eastern League franchise beginning play at The Diamond in 2010. The original fi nalists (Flatheads, Flying Squirrels, Rhinos, and Rock Hoppers) were chosen from a pool of more than 6,000 entries from fans during an on-line entry period which ran from September 23rd - 30th.
In partnership with CNBC.com and CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell, wild card name suggestions were accepted via email at firstname.lastname@example.org from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, October 7th. Over 9,000 entries were submitted during the period. Rovell was responsible for narrowing down the field and ultimately deciding the wild card entrant.
"CNBC.com was overwhelmed by the tremendous response we had from the Richmond community as well as from the national audience, who, for the first time, had a chance to name a minor league team," said Rovell who writes the "Sports-Biz" blog on the Web site. "We hope that the name that was eventually chosen, the Richmond Hush Puppies, will ultimately prevail."
The name was suggested by only one out of the more than 9,000 entrants. CNBC is currently in the process of tracking down a man named Jeff Dunn, who sent in that pick at 8:37 PM last night, 23 minutes before the deadline.
"While Richmond can't exactly claim the hush puppy as its own, it obviously does have its roots in the South," Rovell said. "I also thought it was different to go with a food over an animal. It's kid-friendly, has great mascot possibilities and I'm sure it will be a very popular concession item."
