Ty Kelly, 2009 IronBirds MVP 09/08/2009 9:01 AM ETBy Chris Reed
The Aberdeen IronBirds are excited to announce the recipient of the 2009 Team MVP award, Ty Kelly. Kelly, a thirteenth round draft pick from the University of California Davis, was a New York Penn League All-Star in his first season of Professional Baseball. While standing at only 6'0" and weighing in at 185 lbs. IronBirds third baseman, Ty Kelly, didn't seem to be an intimidating force for the opposition this season. On Opening Day that all changed as Kelly went 3 for 4 and showed that he was ready to be a driving force for the IronBirds 2009 campaign. Kelly was 60 for 226 on the season, sporting a .265 Avg. While doing most of his damage out of the 2nd or 3rd slot in the batting order. The 2009 All-Star had a .357 OBP and slugged .310 with a .667 OPS. His 18 RBI's were fifth best on the team, while he crossed the dish 31 times for second on the team. The IronBirds have awarded a Team MVP every year with past recipients including; Neal Stephenson (2002), Nick Markakis (2003), David Haehnel (2004), Mark Fleisher (2005), Chris Vinyard (2006), Matt Angle (2007), and Rick Zagone (2008).
