Kason Gabbard Returns to Portland

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have received left-handed pitcher Kason Gabbard from Extended Spring Training. Right-handed pitcher Bryce Cox rejoins the Sea Dogs from Single-A Lowell. Left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 13th. Right-handed pitcher Ryne Lawson was transferred to Single-A Lowell on Monday, June 15th. Earlier today the Sea Dogs received outfielder Matt Sheely from Single-A Salem. Sea Dogs' outfielder Bubba Bell was transferred to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, June 15th.

Gabbard will wear uniform number 18 and will start for the Sea Dogs on Thursday, June 18th at 6:00 PM against the Erie SeaWolves at Hadlock Field. Gabbard appeared in 54 games with the Sea Dogs from 2004-2006. Gabbard is 21-19, 4.37 ERA (126 ER/259.1 IP) in 54 games/52 starts in his career with Portland. Gabbard ranks fifth in Sea Dogs franchise history with 21 career wins. His .818 winning percentage (9-2 record) in 2006 is tied for the single season franchise record with four others.

The lefty was traded back to Boston from Texas on April 29th of this year for cash considerations. Gabbard was pitching at Triple-A Oklahoma City where he appeared in five games for the RedHawks, going 0-1, 10.50 ERA (7 ER/6 IP).

The Florida native went 9-7, 4.53 ERA in parts of four seasons in the Major Leagues with Texas and Boston. He was traded to the Rangers on July 31, 2007 with outfielder David Murphy and outfielder Engel Beltre for right-handed pitcher Eric Gagne and cash considerations.

In 20 appearances for Portland in 2009, Cox has a record of 0-1 with three saves and a 3.12 ERA. The 24 year-old was selected by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.

Doubront has made 12 starts for the Sea Dogs this season posting a 4-2 record with a 3.19 ERA. The 21 year-old is on the Red Sox 40-man roster. He was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on July 12, 2004.

The 23 year-old Lawson has notched a 1-5 record with a 7.14 ERA in eight starts with the Sea Dogs this season. Lawson was selected by the Red Sox in 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
