Mehring Monday 10/5: Other Sports

Baseball season is heading to the post-season very soon and both the NFL and college football are in full swing. Believe me. I'll be watching as much of it as I can over the next few months.

But, there are other sports that catch my attention during the long, cold winter months. Here are a few:

Hockey. Not so much the NHL anymore, but the Green Bay Gamblers, the Wisconsin Badgers, and UW-Superior are always on my radar at this point in the year.

Soccer. The English Premier League on Fox Soccer Channel is a heck of a way to pass a Saturday morning before the college games or a Sunday morning between Mass and the noon kickoffs for the NFL games. Plus, the FA Cup won me over a couple of years ago. This is a tournament that is open to all teams in the Football Association in England. The American baseball equivalent would be having everyone in the National Association participate with the opportunity for the Timber Rattlers to play the New York Yankees in a round.

Poker. I already know the November Nine, but that won't stop me from watching how they got there during the 2009 World Series of Poker. Watch two hours of this on Tuesday nights and it is bound to be more entertaining that anything else on that night. Plus, unlike the other sports on this list, I can actually play this one.

Basketball. I don't follow the NBA as closely as I did at one point, but I'll be around when the Badgers or Marquette are on TV or if Lawrence or UW-Oshkosh have a good game on the schedule.

Wrestling. It's entertaining and I will admit to watching it from now until March. Or, WrestleMania...Whichever comes last. Whatcha gonna' do?

This is how I get my sports fix over the next 185 days.
