Jered Weaver struck out 14 and tossed a two-hitter on Friday night as the Salt Lake Bees blanked the Sacramento River Cats, 1-0, at Franklin Covey Field.
Weaver (5-1), who threw 72 of 105 pitches for strikes, retired the first 15 batters before issuing a leadoff walk to Jason Perry in the sixth. The no-hitter remained intact until Nathan Espy blooped a single to left with two outs in the seventh.
Scott McClain followed with an infield single, but Weaver regained his momentum and retired the final seven batters.
In his second start since returning from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the former first-round draft pick struck out the side in the ninth to break his own franchise record for strikeouts in a game. The 6-foot-7 right-hander has won eight consecutive decisions, including four during his recent stint in the Major Leagues.
The first-place Bees (44-30) scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Corey Myers drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Casey Smith. After Erick Aybar and Reggie Willits walked to load the bases, Major League veteran Curtis Pride delivered an RBI groundout to second base.
Weaver's battery mate, Jeff Mathis, was the only player on either team with more than one hit. He went 2-for-4, while Jason Aspito's second-inning double was the only extra-base hit. Howie Kendrick went 0-for-4 as his Pacific Coast League-leading batting average dropped to .389.
River Cats (37-38) starter Benjamin Fritz (1-1) suffered the hard-luck loss after giving up one run on four hits in five innings. He walked five and fanned three.
