Herrera, Chukars sweep Owlz
09/10/2006 8:49 PM ET
Brenan Herrera's grand slam capped a six-run fifth inning as the Idaho Falls Chukars rolled past the Orem Owlz, 9-3, on Sunday to sweep the best-of-3 Pioneer League South Division Finals.

After Marc Maddox's two-run double off starter Kenneth Herndon gave the Chukars a 5-2 lead in the fifth, Barret Browning got Jase Turner on a groundout and intentionally walked Christopher McConnell to load the bases. Herrera then deposited a pitch from Pedro Herrera over the left-field wall for his first professional grand slam and only hit of the series.

The 24-year-old third baseman has four home runs in his two-year career.

Idaho Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on Turner's three-run blast.

The Owlz responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, when Tadd Brewer scored on Christopher Pettit's sacrifice fly and Peter Bourjos came home on Abel Nieves' groundout.

Bourjos was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Luis Rivera was 3-for-3 for Orem.

Idaho Falls starter Everett Teaford (1-0) pitched five innings to nab the win. The 22-year-old left-hander gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Aaron Hartsock fanned two over three shutout innings before Jacob Eckley tossed a perfect ninth to close out the series.

Herndon (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on five hits and three walks over four innings.

The Chukars take on the Missoula Osprey in the best-of-3 Championship Series, beginning Tuesday at 9:05 p.m. ET in Missoula.
