Scouting Weathers, Brackman, Friday, more02/14/2007 4:42 PM ET
By Jonathan Mayo / Peoria Chiefs
For week two of the Draft Report, there are some cosmetic changes with the goal of making the weekly updates look more like scouting reports. Don't worry, draft nuts, the information is the same. Hopefully, this will make it an even better read.
Most of this week's report comes from Minute Maid Park, where the Houston College Classic took place over the weekend, though we did check in on that tall ace at North Carolina State as well. High school supporters will have to wait. The prep season really doesn't get underway until next weekend, but the Report will be there to provide inside information on how some of the top teens -- particularly in Texas -- get started in 2007.
This week's report takes a closer look at:
Darwin Barney, SS, Oregon State: The smooth-fielding middle infielder is off to a decent start with the bat, hitting .308 over his first seven games. Complete Report.
Andrew Brackman, RHP, NC State: The 6-foot-10 former two-sport star began his baseball-only career by picking up the win against William & Mary (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Complete Report.
Joshua Fields, RHP, Georgia: With a chance to close out a win against Oregon State on Friday, Fields was not in command, giving up five earned runs and three walks in one inning. Complete Report.
Brian Friday, SS, Rice: Friday went 3-for-12 at the Houston College Classic, but continued to show the ability to play shortstop. Complete Report
Tyler Henley, OF, Rice: Rice's leadoff hitter went 2-for-10 at the Houston College Classic. Complete Report
Eddie Kunz, RHP, Oregon State: The OSU closer appeared in two games, picking up a win and a save in the sweep against Georgia. Complete Report.
David Price, LHP, Vanderbilt: The Vanderbilt ace went 5 2/3 innings against Rice at the Houston Classic, allowing six hits, three runs and three walks while striking out six. Complete Report
Joe Savery, LHP, Rice: Continuing to work back from offseason shoulder surgery, Savery had an encouraging outing on Sunday at the Houston Classic, tossing four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out three. Complete Report.
Casey Weathers, RHP, Vanderbilt: The senior was strong in back-to-back appearances, going a total of three innings without allowing a hit or a walk while striking out three. Complete Report
Others of note: OF Matt Spencer, a junior transfer to ASU from U. of North Carolina, piqued scouts interest with raw power after hitting two home runs, one a mammoth shot, at the Houston Classic. ... Baylor RHP Randall Linebaugh ( 4 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) has fringy, average stuff, but knows how to pitch and keeps the ball around the strike zone. ... Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters, generally considered to be the top college bat in the draft, began the season 0-for-9, then broke out with a 2-for-5, three-RBI performance on Tuesday, including a game-winning home run in the 10th inning. He also got the win on the mound in relief.
