Field cut in half on way to MiLB's best name 03/19/2007 12:43 PM ETBy Benjamin Hill / Special to MLB.com
After six frenzied days of voting, we are now one step closer to determining the best name in all of Minor League Baseball. Nearly 20,000 votes were tabulated in the first round of MiLB.com's inaugural "Minors Moniker Madness" tournament, and 32 names were eliminated (Yahmed Yema, we hardly knew ye). Thirty-two names remain, however. Round Two is now underway, and will determine who makes it to the Sweet 16. But first, let's take a look at the first-round results (for those new to the contest, each bracket honors a classic name from Minor League history): Icicle Reeder Bracket Biggest Blowout: Bronson Kiheimahanaomauiakeo Sardinha (81%) over Austin Bibens-Dirkx (19%). Closest Match: Arquimedes Euclides Caminero (51%) over Flint Wipke (49%). Key Second-Round Matchups: Scharlon Schoop takes on Seung Song in a battle of alliterative beauty; Arquimedes Euclides Caminero meets the equally verbose Ludovicus Van Mil. Farmer Works Bracket Biggest Blowout: Jorge Poo Tang (92%) over Jacob Hurry (8%). Closest Match: Johnny Defendis (51%) over Darling Read (49%). Key Second-Round Matchups: The aforementioned Jorge Poo Tang vs. Rocky Cherry, who made quick work of A.J. Zapp in the first round; The "Master of Horror," Stephen King, takes on Gil Gil. Natty Natress Bracket Biggest Blowout: Rowdy Hardy (86%) over Felipe A. Paulino Del Giudice (14%). Closest Match: Houston Summers defeated Angel Pagan by a mere four votes. Key Second-Round Matchups: Two powerhouses go head-to-head, as Jung Bong meets Rowdy Hardy; meanwhile, Winter Polo battles "Goodfella" Ray Liotta. Razor Shines Bracket Biggest Blowout: Boodle Clark (77%) over Yormi Yan (23%). Closest Match: Dognnt Bolivar (52%) over Matthew Manship (48%). Key Second-Round Matchups: It's "Boof vs. the Bambino," as Boof Bonser takes on Richard Bambino; also, country music sensation Brooks Dunn meets Noochie Varner. Round Two is underway, and will last until Thursday at 12 p.m. ET. Cast your votes now!
