ST-Springfield Slides by 'Birds, 2-1 03/23/2006 3:30 PM ETBy Kyle Parkinson, Media Relations Coordinator / Memphis Redbirds
Jupiter, FL - On a gray, windy day on the back fields of the Cardinals Spring Training complex Springfield beat Memphis 2-1 in a pitcher's duel. Springfield used a Matt Dryer RBI-double and a Brian Martin home run as their only offense, which happened to be enough for the win. For Memphis outfielder Prentice Redman went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and third baseman Travis Hanson went 1-for-3 and scored the lone Redbirds run. Pitching was the theme of the day as Jeff Nelson started for the Redbirds, pitching two innings and allowing one run on two hits. Randy Leek followed with five solid innings, allowing one run on three hits. For Springfield, Houston High School product Stuart Pomeranz tossed four innings and allowed one run on four hits to earn the win. The Redbirds return to action tomorrow afternoon against Norfolk the Triple-A affiliate for the Mets, who will be in town to take on the Cardinals. Game time for Memphis is scheduled for 11:30 CST.
