The 2016 Asheville Tourists baseball season is one that will not be soon forgotten. The Tourists remained competitive and entertaining to watch throughout. Fans came out to support the team in record fashion. McCormick Field saw 183,058 fans pass through the front gates; an all-time regular season Asheville Tourists record.
The South Atlantic League and President Eric Krupa announced the selection of the 2016 Annual All-Star Team. Brian Mundell was named the league's best first-baseman; Brendan Rodgers the league's best shortstop, and Yonathan Daza one of the three best outfielders. Furthermore, Mundell earned league MVP honors and Rodgers was selected as the Most Outstanding MLB Prospect.
With the 2016 season hitting the home stretch, the Asheville Tourists have officially released their schedule for 2017. Asheville will host 70 regular season games, 32 in the first half of the season and 38 in the second half.
Asheville Tourists first-baseman Brian Mundell set a modern Minor League record for doubles in an individual season by recording his 56th double of the 2016 campaign with a two-bagger against the Hickory Crawdads. Mundell finished the season with 59 doubles.
The Colorado Rockies and the Asheville Tourists announced earlier today that the two organizations have extended their partnership with a new Player Development Contract that will run through 2018. The Tourists have been affiliated with the Rockies since 1994; the first season Colorado had a full allotment of minor league affiliates.
