Comments
Hitting Ability:Mangini didn't swing the bat well in this game, on a cold night, but usually has a good approach, good presence in the box and a good idea of the strike zone. In comparison to this game, Mangini swung a wood bat better last summer when he won the Cape Cod batting title
Power:More of a pure contact hitter thus far, he should develop decent power from the left side.
Running Speed:He won't clog the basepaths and runs OK for a big guy, but he grades out as a tick below average.
Base Running:He's a little better runner underway, but he's never going to be a base-stealing threat.
Arm Strength:Mangini has an above-average arm from the hot corner.
Fielding:He wasn't tested in this game, but he showed easy actions defensively and could be a solid to above-average defender.
Range:He's got surprisingly good agility, especially for a player his size.
Physical Description:Mangini is a big, lefty-swinging third baseman who is a pretty decent athlete and shows loose actions instead of the stiffness you might expect for someone his size.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Usually, his approach at plate and overall hitting ability.
Weaknesses:At this game, there was some concern that Mangini had developed some bad habits in terms of having an aluminum bat swing. He handled wood well last summer and scouts will want to see him return to that swing before considering him early.
Summary:In terms of pure hitters from the college ranks, the transfer from North Carolina State might rank only behind Matt Wieters from Georgia Tech. But for him to be considered that highly, he may have to show the swing that scouts liked so much in the Cape. There is some concern that his approach would change during the season, but he'll be watched very closely the rest of the way to see if he belongs in that category.
