Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Lobstein threw his fastball 88-90 mph, though he's shown more in the past.
Fastball movement:It's fairly flat, though it does have good late movement, with tail that bores into left-handed hitters.
Curve:He has a hard curve, not quite a 12-to-6 breaking ball, but it's got some serious tilt.
Changeup:He didn't show it much in this outing, but it's a strong average pitch, with a chance to be plus in the future.
Control:His command was spotty in this outing; he even hit a batter, which is rare. Usually, he's better in this area.
Poise:He's fine on the mound, though he often comes across as a little low-energy. In this outing, he showed some energy.
Physical Description:A big, projectable lefty, Lobstein is kind of like a stronger Chuck Finley type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:He has the chance to throw three plus pitches with a smooth and easy delivery.
Weaknesses:When he's on, there's not much to complain about. Playing basketball -- and the cold weather -- does put him behind some pitchers.
Summary:A projectable lefty who has the chance to throw three at least average Major League pitches, he certainly will be watched closely all spring. A basketball player as well, Lobstein is athletic on the mound and has a free and easy delivery. He gets started a little late because of hoops, but if he throws as he's capable of as the season wears on, he could be one of the first high school lefties to be taken in June.
