Bill Smith serves as an Assistant to President Dave St. Peter and to General Manager Terry Ryan, focusing on a broad range of projects including:
Bill Smith was named the fifth general manager in club history on September 13, 2007. Smith was responsible for oversight of the Twins baseball department, including all aspects of the Major League, Minor League and Scouting departments.
As vice president/assistant general manager to Terry Ryan for 13 years (1994-2007), Smith negotiated major league player contracts, oversaw the Twins' Latin American scouting & development operations, and assisted with the day-to-day operations for the Twins baseball department.
Smith was graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, in 1980, with a B.A. in French. He was selected by the Commissioner's Office as one of the first participants in Major League Baseball's Executive Development Program in July, 1980. From there, he spent two seasons with the Chicago White Sox as assistant director of minor leagues and scouting (1981-82), followed by three seasons as General Manager of the White Sox class "A" minor league affiliate in Appleton, WI (1983 - 1985).
He joined the Twins organization in March 1986, as assistant director of minor leagues and scouting, and was promoted to director of baseball administration in October 1989 and to assistant general manager following the 1991 season.
Smith served as the Twins' liaison during the design and construction of the club's spring training complex in Fort Myers, Florida from 1989-91. Bill and his wife Becky have three daughters, twins Amy and Allison (24) and Jennifer (18). The Smiths make their home in Bloomington, MN.

- International player development programs in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and beyond.
- Development and maintenance of superior baseball facilities throughout the system.
- Work with the GM and Sr. Director of Minor Leagues to ensure ongoing success of the relationships with the Twins minor league affiliates.
