SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Daric Barton finished 4-for-5 and Nate Freiman hit a three-run home run, but the River Cats ultimately fell to the Salt Lake Bees by a score of 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.
After Andy Parrino and Daric Barton singled in the top of the first inning, Freiman put the River Cats ahead 3-0 with left field on a 3-2 pitch. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Bees plated one in the first and two in the second, tying the game at three after two innings. Neither team scored again until the fifth, when Barton put the River Cats ahead 5-3 with a two-run homer to right field.
The Bees returned the favor, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a run-scoring double by Zach Borenstein, putting the Bees back on top 6-5. The River Cats then tied the score at six when Barton singled-home Tyler Ladendorf in the top of the seventh. The game remain tied until the bottom of the ninth when Brennan Boesch sent Bees fans home happy with a walk-off single, giving the River Cats a 7-6 loss.
Barton went 4-for-5 with two runs, three RBI, a double, and a home run, while Freiman finished 2-for-4 with a run, three RBI, and his ninth home run of the season. River Cats infielder Jake Elmore went 2-for-2 in a return to his MLB rehab assignment. Sacramento starter Marcus Walden took a no-decision, giving up 10 hits and six runs-five earned-with one walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Jeremy McBryde suffered the loss, giving up one earned run in one inning of relief.
The win was awarded to reliever Dane De La Rosa, who recorded one out. Bees starter Jarrett Grube took a no-decision, giving up eight hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts. Efren Navarro went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Shawn O'Malley finished 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and a triple.
Sacramento returns to Raley Field on Monday, June 9, to start an eight-game homestand that begins with a four-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers, followed by four contests versus Manny Ramirez and the Iowa Cubs. River Cats starter Dan Straily (3-0, 4.40 ERA) will take on Storm Chasers lefty Ryan Verdugo (2-1, 5.11 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night at Raley Field.
