Cutters Sweep Auburn in Offensive Slugfest

Auburn, NY - The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their fourth straight win and three game sweep of the Auburn Doubledays on Sunday night at Falcon Park. The Cutters scored nine runs in the game including five in the first inning to hold off the Doubledays and improve to 39-22 this season. Williamsport holds a 5 1/2 game lead over second place State College with the Spikes win over Batavia.

The Crosscutters had a quick start offensively against Auburn starter Taylor Hearn, who allowed four consecutive Cutters to reach base. Williamsport scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-0 lead and put themselves in the driver's seat. Jose Pujols, Venn Biter and Austin Bossart delivered RBI singles for Williamsport and Luis Espiritu Jr. scored two runs to highlight the inning with a double.  

Williamsport would squander a couple of chances to extend their lead in the second and third innings by stranding six runners on base. The Cutters would chase Hearn from the game after loading the bases in the third inning. Auburn would look to their bullpen to get out of the jam as Maximo Valerio took over and would get a pair of flyouts to end the threat. Leading 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning the Cutters would finally tack on some runs against the Doubledays. Williamsport batted around the lineup scoring four runs on six hits to take a 9-1 lead. Mark Laird delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a two RBI single into left field.

Williamsport received five innings of four run baseball from Mitch Gueller. Gueller would exit the game with a 9-4 lead, looking for his eighth win of the season. Williamsport would need every one of their nine runs as Auburn rallied against the bullpen to bring the game to 9-8 heading to the ninth inning. Feliberto Sanchez worked one inning for the Cutters alowing two runs. Jacob Waguespack worked two innings striking out four batters. Waguespack allowed a pair of unearned runs. Rob Tasin shut the books on Auburn to end the threat and pick up his league leading 13th save of the season. Gueller improves to 8-1 on the season with the win. 

Williamsport will play open up a three game series against the State College Spikes tomorrow at Susquehanna Bank Park. First pitch on Monday night is set for 7:05 P.M. It will be a huge series with just 5 1/2 games separating the two teams as it will be Military Monday at Susquehanna Bank Park along with Hoss's Knothole Gang Night. The Cutters will then hit the road for a three game series with the Batavia Muckdogs.
