Landazuri Spectacular in Loss Sunday

Righty fires seven innings of one-run ball, but Generals shut out
August 23, 2015

Montgomery, Ala. - The Jackson Generals got a fantastic start from Stephen Landazuri Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the team was held scoreless in a 1-0 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium. Landazuri became just the third starter this season to go seven innings for the Generals, giving up only a run on five hits.

Landazuri (1-5, 4.43) was efficient all night long, throwing between 11 and 17 pitches in each of his seven innings. He got help from his defense as well, as Jackson turned an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the second inning and Guillermo Pimentel threw out a runner at the plate in the fourth to keep the Biscuits scoreless.

The right-hander went a season-long seven innings and tied his best effort with six strikeouts. He joined James Gillheeney and Edwin Diaz with a start of at least seven frames this year. Jackson has gotten three consecutive quality starts and the team has four in its last six games.

Montgomery's league-leading offense was kept in check until the sixth inning. Patrick Leonard led off with a single before coming home to score on a double to left field to make it 1-0. The one run would turn out to be enough for the Biscuits.

Jackson (17-38, 46-77) nearly tied the game in the next half-inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, Pimentel launched a 3-2 offering to left-center field. It was initially called a home run, but after a conference the umpires ruled that it was a ground-rule double.

That was as far as the Generals got a baserunner on Sunday night. Jake Faria (5-3, 2.89) one-upped Landazuri for Montgomery (34-22, 68-56), striking out 11 batters in seven innings while giving up just two hits and not walking a batter.

The Generals put the tying runner aboard in the ninth inning on a bunt single by Ian Miller, but that was all they could muster against Ryne Stanek (S, 1). Stanek fired two scoreless innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.

Jackson was shut out for the 19th time in a loss this season, which is the most of any Southern League squad. The team has been held scoreless in two of its last three games, with just one run in a loss to Biloxi Saturday.

The series at Riverwalk Stadium continues Monday night. Jackson sends Misael Siverio (4-10, 4.20), who hasn't allowed a run in his last 12 innings, to the bump opposite Montgomery All-Star Jaime Schultz (7-5, 4.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm CT, and you can catch all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1 and 94.3) and the TuneIn Radio App starting at 6:50 with the Tennessee Army National Guard Pregame Show.
