Redbirds fall 2-1 to I-Cubs in game 2

Memphis avoids shutout with late rally
April 23, 2012

Des Moines, IA - The Redbirds fell 2-1 to the I-Cubs Sunday afternoon at Principal Park. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Cubs.

It was anything but rough for Iowa starter Chris Rusin (2-2) who blanked the Redbirds on two hits over eight innings. He did not allow a walk while fanning four batters. Not only did he stymie Memphis hitters all afternoon, he also drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The Cubs extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Anthony Rizzo and Welington Castillo.

Brian Broderick (1-3) took the loss despite allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three.

The Redbirds avoided their third shutout of the season when Cedric Hunter's two-out single in the ninth scored Adron chambers. Chambers had walked and advanced on a passed ball. Despite blowing the shutout, Blake Parker picked up his third save in the ninth inning.

The three Memphis hits equaled a season-low, coming one day of setting a season-best twelve runs and fourteen hits.

Monday's probables:
Memphis - RHP Joe Kelly (0-1, 2.12)
Iowa - RHP Jay Jackson (1-1, 587)
