Cardinals Comeback Fall Short, Lose 8-6

April 23, 2012
The Palm Beach Cardinals (6-11) rally late, but eventually fall to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (8-9), 8-6.

In the top of the second inning, the Stone Crabs utilized a base on balls and a double by Mikie Mahtook to score their first run on a fielder's choice by Riccio Torrez. The Cardinals came back in the bottom half of the inning, as Alan Ahmady lead off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Packy Elkins.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Cardinals took the lead in the third on an RBI single by Chris Edmondson. In the fourth inning, both teams exchanged runs to make the score 3-2 Cardinals.

The Stone Crabs facing a deficit came out swinging in the sixth, as they plated four runs on three hits. Catcher Mayobanex Acosta crushed a Dean Kiekhefer fastball over the center field fence to make it 6-3.

The Cardinal bats would not go down without a fight, as they scored three runs in the eighth. Elkins delivered his first home run of the year as he blasted the Elizer Suero offering over the right field fence to pull the Beach birds within two runs.

After Geoff Klein singled to left field, the Cardinals got a huge lift from Ronny Gil, as he hit his first home run against Suero to tie it up at 6-6.

However, the Cardinals comeback would be short lived, as the Stone Crabs scored two runs in the ninth. Phillip Wunderlich connected for a bases loaded single to knock in the winning runs.

The Cardinals tried to rally in the ninth, but their rally fell through as Chris Rearick finished the game and collected his first win of the season, while the loss went to Chase Reid.

Offensively, the Beach Birds were led by Allen Craig, who went 3-for-4 in his second rehab assignment with the Palm Beach Cardinals, while Edmondson and Mike Swinson each had two hits.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow night, as they host the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the rubber-match of this three-game set. Carlos Martinez will take the ball for the Cardinals as he tries to win his first game of the season.
