Cubs stomp the Redbirds

'Birds swept at home

Memphis, TN- The Cubs scored often and added four runs in the ninth to defeat the Redbirds 8-2 and completed the four-game sweep on Monday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

Memphis starter Brian Broderick falls to 2-7 on the season after allowing three runs and two walks on seven hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in five innings, Iowa's Brooks Raley picked up the win and improved to 1-1 on the year.

Iowa first baseman Josh Vitters got things going in the first inning smashing a solo home run to left field. In the fourth inning outfielder Brett Jackson connected on yet another RBI triple to put the Cubs up 2-0. In the fifth inning outfielder Dave Sappelt's RBI double would put Iowa up 3-0.

The 'Birds would tack on two runs in the sixth when shortstop Ryan Jackson collected a two-run single, but it was all Iowa in the ninth inning as the Cubs scored four runs, thanks to an Alfredo Amezaga RBI single and a Steve Clevenger two-run single and another run resulting in a throwing error to put the game out of reach, 8-2.

The Redbirds will next welcome Round Rock to Memphis on Tuesday, May 29, at 7:05 p.m. (CT) at AZP.
