Cardinals Walk-Off Over Hammerheads, 3-2

June 21, 2012
The Palm Beach Cardinals (32-36, 1-0) opened the first half in dramatic fashion, as they left the Jupiter Hammerheads (36-35, 0-1) on the field with a walk-off 3-2 victory. Catcher Geoffrey Klein delivered the game winner, hitting an RBI single to end the game at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Cardinals did not start of on the right foot, falling behind in the top of the third. After two hits by Danny Pertusati and Isaac Galloway, Danny Black hit into a fielder's choice to make it 1-0 Hammerheads.

The Cardinals answered with one in the third and one in the fifth. In the third inning, Mike O'Neill laced a single to left, scoring Ronny Gil from second base to tie it at 1-1. While in the fifth, the Cardinals utilized a bases loaded walk to Rainel Rosario to jump out to a 2-1 lead. With runners on second and third and two outs, the Hammerheads decided to intentionally walk O'Neill, which resulted in Rosario's bases loaded walk.

Starter Ryan Sherriff (4-0) left them in a great shape, hurling seven innings of one run ball and keeping the Cardinals on the right side of the scoreboard. He was in line to pick up his fifth victory of the season, but the bullpen let the Hammerheads back in the game in the eighth.

Iden Nazario walked Black with one out. After a single by Christian Yelich, the Hammerheads had runners on the corners with two outs. The left-hander bailed out the Hammerheads by uncorking a wild pitch, allowing Black to score and tie the game at 2-2.

The Cardinals looked like they would let another slip away in the 11th inning, as J.T. Realmuto led the inning off with a double off of Dean Kiekhefer. After a failed bunt attempt by Christian Yelich and a walk to Mark Canha, the Cardinals called on for activated Chase Reid (4-5). The right-hander came in an got two tough outs to preserve the tie.

The Cardinals got their own lead off double in the 11th, as Jonathan Rodriguez connected for his 16th of the year. Tyler Rahmatulla moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt and Klein ended it with a deep RBI single that one hopped the left field wall.

Jonathan Rodriguez and Klein paced the Cardinals with two hits a piece.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow night, as they host the Jupiter Hammerheads in game two of this three game set at 6:35 p.m. Chris Corrigan will make his first appearance since joining the Cardinals two weeks ago.
