Solorzano's big game not enough for a Jammers win

June 23, 2012

The Jammers suffered a tough loss in extra innings against the Batavia Muckdogs. Batavia starter Tim Cooney pitched four perfect innings before having his perfect game bid broken up in the bottom of the fifth by Jammers third baseman Matt Juengel.

Jammers starter Helpi Reyes started the night off looking very impressive. Reyes struck out two in the top of the first and rolled until the fourth inning. In the fourth the Muckdogs would plate their first run of the game on a David Bergin double that would score Jacob Wilson. Wilson got into scoring position with help from Helpi Reyes' wild pitch. Reyes struck out seven and walked three over five innings.

The top of the fifth Reyes continued to unravel as he walked the leadoff hitter Gary Apelian. With Apelian on at first the pressure started to mount for Reyes, Apelian took advantage and swiped second. With a runner in scoring position, CF Steve Ramos grounded out to shortstop Rony Peralta. Two batters later Breyvic Valera grounds out to short and Apelian scored giving the Muckdogs a 2-1 lead.

Conney's night would turn sour in the bottom of the fifth with a single from Matt Juengel that shot right to the shortstop Anthony Melchionda, the ball took an awkward hop over the head of Melchionda and with that the perfect game was over.

Next batter in the inning Jammers shortstop Austin Nola hit into a doubleplay. With two outs and nobody on Jesus Solorzano would hit a solo blast to put the Jammers one run behind the Muckdogs. Rony Peralta would line out to end the inning.

After manager Angel Espada had seen enough from Reyes, he brought in reliever Bryan Berglund. Berglund came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings striking out two, but allowing a run in the top of the seventh in the form of a double to Anthony Melchionda.

The Jammers would answer back again, this time with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jammers first baseman Felix Munoz was drilled to lead off the inning. With Munoz on first, the next batter was Matt Juengel who received a walk. With runners on first and second and no outs Austin Nola sac bunted advancing Munoz to third and Juengel to second. Jesus Solorzano would continue his night with a single that scored Munoz and Juengel.

The game would remain tied and headed into extras. In the top of the tenth Batavia plated two more runs putting the game nearly out of reach for the Jammers. The Jammers would have a chance though to tie the game in the bottom of the tenth when leadoff hitter Rony Peralta walked. After the walk to Peralta Muckdog reliever Jose Almarante got called for balking, thus advancing Peralta to second. With Peralta in scoring position at second and Sharif Othman at the plate Almarante threw a wild pitch Peralta advanced to third. The Jammers luck ran out as Othman hit into a double play. Down to their last out pitcher Lee Stopelmann came in to relieve Jose Alamarante to record the final out. Jammers outfielder Kentrell Dewitt popped up to short to end the game.

Jose Alamarante got credit for the win, and Jammers reliever Miguel Fermin would suffer the loss. The Jammers record now stands at (3-3) on the season.
