Bisons Come From Behind in 9th to Win

July 12, 2012

The Pawtucket Red Sox were one out away from a victory on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium before the Buffalo Bisons rallied for 4 runs with two outs in the 9th to stun the PawSox, 8-5. There was good news, however, as rehabbing Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford went 2-for-3 with a run scored playing 5-innings in left field. He will be back in the PawSox line-up on Friday night and expected to play all 9-innings when the Sox host Buffalo again at 7:05 pm at McCoy.

Thursday night in their first game following the All-Star break, the PawSox had the win in their hands but 1B Lars Anderson threw slightly behind pitcher Clayton Mortensen who was covering first base on an infield grounder and what would have been the final out turned into a throwing error on Anderson. Mortensen walked the next hitter to put runners on 1st and 2nd and gave way to Garrett Mock. The usually reliable Mock walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and then proceeded to walk in the tying and go-ahead runs. When he issued his fourth straight walk to the next batter bringing home another run, he was removed in favor or Tony Pena, Jr. who gave up an infield single to plate the fourth Buffalo run of the inning and make the final 8-5.

Buffalo scored a pair of runs off PawSox starter Doug Mathis in the 3rd-inning to take a 2-0 lead. The PawSox got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd as Che-Hsuan Lin and Crawford led the inning with singles and Ryan Kalish ripped an RBI single.

Pawtucket used a 4-run 5th-inning to take a 5-4 lead. Lin and Crawford again opened the inning with singles. Lin scored when Ryan Lavarnway stroked a double and Crawford came across on an RBI single by Anderson. Jon Hee tied things with an RBI single and Scott Podsednik gave the PawSox their first lead of the game with a sac fly. That lead held until the fateful 9th.

Mortensen (4-3) was saddled with the loss as he was charged with 2 unearned runs over his 2-innings of work. Mock was also charged with 2 runs without getting an out in the 9th. Garrett Olson (4-5) was the winner in relief for Buffalo while former PawSox Fernando Cabrera worked the 9th for his 17th save.

PawSox RHP Billy Buckner (1-3) faces Buffalo's Jeurys Familia on Friday night at 7:05 pm at McCoy on Replica Jersey Night. The first 5,000 fans entering McCoy will receive a replica #2 Pawtucket jersey.
