Sweeney, 34, hasn't played a game since June 17th due to a knee injury. He went on the disabled list on June 19th and underwent surgery on July 5th to correct a cartilage problem in his right knee. Prior to the injury, the Royals' team captain batted .245 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 57 games. Sweeney was an A.L. All-Star in 2000-2003 and in 2005. He was named the Royals Player of the Year in 2000, '02 and '05. A 10th round draft pick of the Royals in 1991, Sweeney played for Omaha in the 1996 and 1997 seasons and has made brief rehab assignment stints with the club in 2002, 2003 and again last season. Friday's doubleheader marks the final Werner Enterprises Fireworks Friday of the season, also presented by KETV-Channel 7 and KGOR 99.9 FM.
