Drillers Win!

The Tulsa Drillers are no longer without a victory, and they can thank the first three hitters in their lineup. Corey Wimberly, Dexter Fowler and Chris Nelson were a combined 9-15 Sunday afternoon as the Drillers defeated the San Antonio Missions for their first win of the year. The victory improved Tulsa's record to 1-3 on the young season.

Batting leadoff, Wimberly had hits in each of his first four plate appearances and extended his consecutive hits streak to nine straight at-bats before striking out in the eighth inning. The consecutive streak was only three hits off the Texas League record. The infielder is now hitting a sizzling .818 (9-11) for the year.

Batting second and third, Fowler was 3-5 and Nelson was 2-5 to help the Drillers to a season high 16 hits. Eric Young Jr. added three hits and Duke Sardinha contributed two more.

Fowler and Young accomplished rare feats by getting two triples each. The last Drillers player to get two triples in a game was Ryan Spilborghs on April 24, 2005.

Starting pitcher Xavier Cedeno (1-0) picked up the win in his first outing of the year. Cedeno allowed seven hits and two runs (1ER) in five innings of work.

Matt Daley, Ryan Mattheus and Casey Weathers combined to blank the Missions on two hits over the final four innings. Mattheus struck out three of the four hitters he faced.

The Drillers fell behind 2-0 before striking for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Young tripled and scored on a double Wimberly. Fowler then tripled him home before scoring himself on a base hit by Nelson.

Tulsa scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. In the seventh, Wimberly singled for his ninth straight hit and scored on Fowler's second three-base hit. Nelson brought Fowler home on a single to center field.

Fowler's two-run single in the eighth completed the scoring.

The Drillers will try to make it two wins in a row Monday night in San Antonio. Tomas Santiago will take the mound for Tulsa against Stephen Faris of the Missions. Game time will be 7:05PM.
