Video: Mayo takes a look at Fenway Futures at Fenway information Dress like a Knight Catch a game at Knights Stadium BOSTON -- They are, by definition, cathedrals of baseball. Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium are the last of a dying breed, and those who get to play on their turf outside of the big leagues are in the minority. So when a Minor Leaguer gets a chance to play on both in one season without a call up to the Majors, it's not only a rare treat, it's rather lucky. Triple-A Charlotte infielder Chris Getz accomplished that feat on Saturday, stepping on Fenway's grass as his Knights took on Pawtucket in the second half of the Futures at Fenway doubleheader in Boston. Getz took part in the All-Star Futures Game in July, with his U.S. Futures squad losing 3-0 to the World crew. Getz went 0-for-2 in the outing. "Going into the year, I had a goal to obviously be in the mix to get called up," Getz said. "But I think to get to play in both Boston and at Yankee Stadium, you don't really predict something like that. It's been an honor to have that opportunity." The two experiences were, to be sure, quite different in Getz's eyes. With the U.S. Futures Game, Getz was notified about three weeks prior that he'd take part. Given it was part of the All-Star festivities and had a national audience enthused, he knew the type of atmosphere he was going to see at the Stadium. But the Futures Game at Fenway, though he knew it was on the schedule since the beginning of the campaign, was much more of a surprise -- namely, the near-capacity crowds on hand for a Minor League doubleheader. "This one was kind of weird," he explained. "Here, it was kind of like we're playing the PawSox at Fenway, but we didn't know the story behind it. This is a little bit overwhelming, to be honest with you." Still, Getz said he realizes how lucky he is to play at both iconic ballparks, one of which -- Yankee Stadium -- will no longer be in use next season. "It's exciting," he said. "This is all part of the game. When you play a game like this, the adrenaline starts flowing a bit more naturally." #ques_include {width:300px;float:right;margin-left:5px;} #ques_content {border-top:1px solid #000000;border-left:1px solid #000000;padding-left:5px;} .ques_schedule {margin-top:5px;font-size:11px;} .ques_dates {font-size:11px;font-style:italic;color:#999;} ![]() Neither venue got the best of his loyalties, however. When asked which of the two historic fields is his favorite, Getz, a Detroit-area native, hesitated for a moment before coming to a conclusion. "I'm going to go with Comerica Park," he said. "I'm a Detroit guy." Mark Remme is an associate reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs. |
