Jayson Miller struck out a career-high nine over seven innings Saturday as the Orem Owlz shut down the Ogden Raptors, 5-1, in Game 1 of the best-of-3 Pioneer League South Division Finals.

Miller (1-0) allowed one run on eight hits in matching the longest outing of his career. He threw seven shutout innings to beat Great Falls on July 10.

Michael Kohn and Andrew Taylor each tossed a scoreless frame as the Owlz moved within a win of their seventh Championship Series appearance in eight years.

Pioneer League MVP Roberto Lopez, who finished the season with a .400 average, broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the fourth. Donato Giovanatto went 3-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored.

Raptors starter Jon Michael Redding (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.

Nick Buss singled and scored the lone run for Ogden on Kyle Russell's double in the fourth. Box score
