Travis Jones and Ernesto Mejia homered Tuesday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans topped the Potomac Nationals, 6-4, at BB&T Coastal Field to even the Mills Cup Finals at 1-1.
After Myrtle Beach was pounded, 15-0, in Monday's opener, Jones snapped a scoreless tie in the second inning with a three-run shot to left field. Mejia, who led the league with 21 homers during the regular season, added a solo blast in the third to make it 4-0.
Pelicans starter Carlos Rivas (1-1) allowed three hits over six scoreless innings, fanning four and walking three, to pick up his first postseason win. Ferdin Tejeda pitched around a walk in a scoreless ninth to notch his second save.
Michael Martinez had two hits and two RBIs and Jhonatan Solano belted a solo homer in the eighth for Potomac, which hosts Game 3 on Thursday.
Nationals starter Jeff Mandel (0-1) lasted 3 2/3 innings and was reached for six runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Box score
