TRENTON, N.J. -- Game 3 of the Eastern League Championship Series between the Akron Aeros and Trenton Thunder was postponed Friday night when it became apparent that the rain that pounded central New Jersey throughout the day was not going to let up.
Game 3 will be played Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Waterfront Park, with Game 4 slated for Sunday at 6:05. If a fifth game is needed, it will be played Monday at 6:05. Tickets for Game 3 only will be honored Saturday.
It began raining around 12:30 p.m. Friday and got progressively worse as evening drew nearer. Eastern league officials were adamant about trying to get the game in, but when the Phillies-Brewers contest, some 40 miles to the west, was postponed, it was obvious there would be no game in Trenton.
Still, the grounds crew at Waterfront Park removed the tarp just before 7 p.m. and began applying a drying agent. While the rain slowed to a drizzle, it never completely stopped. By 8 o'clock, it was coming down as hard as it had all afternoon, prompting the decision to call the game.
Ryan Edell (1-0, 1.23 ERA) is slated to pitch for Akron, while Trenton counters with George Kontos (6-11, 3.68).
