Mehring Monday 5/26: It's a Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles were forced to go on an unprecidented 117 game road trip to accomodate Mehring's fantasy team at Camden Yards.

NOTE: I know that it's Tuesday, but it's the first day of the work week after a holiday weekend. So in my mind, it's a Mehring Monday. Of course, in my mind it's always a Mehring Monday.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people talk about their fantasy teams...Football, baseball, NASCAR, whatever. One of the questions I get the most is What do you do on the bus for long trips? In today's Mehring Monday, I will answer that question with a pet peeve. Because on yesterday's trip from Beloit to Dayton, the staff selected our Pursue the Pennant teams.

If you are unfamiliar with Pursue the Pennant, it is like the old Strat-o-matic games, except instead of cards and dice, a computer will do the computations and give you the results. I prefer this type of baseball computer game to the video games where you need to hold down three buttons and move left to throw to first. Plus, years in the radio booth have ruined my hand-eye-coordination.

The respective GMs and managers are Jeff Isom, Chris Hook, Matt Erickson, Aaron Hoback, Jake Marx, and myself. We selected teams based on the 2008 Major League stats and went to work about an hour into the bus ride.

Since this is Mehring Monday, this column is about my team. I can't worry about someone else's team.

Somehow, I lucked into the first pick of the draft. We had to pick a stadium first. I went with Camden Yards in Baltimore. To stock my team I went with mainly with straight OPS selections for hitters and GO/AO ratio for pitchers.

Based on last year's statistics, if you had the #1 pick in the draft who would you select? Well -- since two weeks ago -- when Jeff got the disc in the mail, I said that I would take Albert Pujols if I had that #1 pick. I didn't waver.

The draft took quite awhile, but all six of us have a roster of 25 players. I'm not going to give you my whole roster, but this is what my Opening Day Lineup will look like.

Curtis Granderson CF

Chase Utley 2B

Albert Pujols 1B

Ryan Braun DH

Nick Markakis RF

Aramis Ramirez 3B

Stephen Drew SS

Carlos Quentin LF

Russell Martin C

Roy Oswalt SP

The rest of my starting rotation is:

Mike Mussina

Mark Buehrle

Aaron Cook

Chad Billingsley

And I can use either Joakim Soria or Jose Valverde as a closer.

I like my chances. Who do you like in the pursuit of this pennant?
