SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce today that Smokies C Steve Clevenger has been promoted to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. In a related roster move, C Mark Reed is arriving to Tennessee from the High-A Daytona Cubs.
Reed appeared in 26 games for Daytona this year, hitting .207 (17-82). He scored eight runs and drove in 10 as the team's catcher. The California native did appear in 18 games for the Smokies in 2008, hitting .317 (20-63) with one home run and 11 RBIs. Reed was a third round pick of the Cubs in the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Clevenger heads to Iowa following a stellar start to his 2009 season. He hit a team-leading .364 (28-77) in 26 games for the Smokies this year, with one home run and 10 RBIs. Clevenger also led the team in OBP (.443) and OPS (.976). He was a seventh-round selection of Chicago's in the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
