Ehire Adrianza's sacrifice fly to shallow left-center scored Dom Duggan with the winning run to give the Augusta GreenJackets a 3-2 win over the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday night in a quirky game from Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Jackets won despite getting outhit 10-4 with two of those hits coming in the bottom of the ninth. Andy D'Alessio led off with a seeing-eye single through the right side and pinch runner Dom Duggan moved to scored on Johnny Monell's hit soon after. Both men advanced on a wild pitch and with the infield up, Adrianza's pop fly was caught by left fielder Ray Kruml as he tumbled head over heels. With Duggan charging from third, Kruml popped up to deliver a throw home that bounced past catcher Mitch Abeita to give the GreenJackets their second walkoff win of the series and 7th of the season.
Augusta led 1-0 on Francisco Peguero's sacrifice fly in the first - one of three sac flies the Jackets picked up in the win - but Abeita's run-scoring single in the second tied the game at one. Corban Joseph gave Charleston a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a two-out RBI single but Juan Perez tied it in the home half of the frame with the second of the three sacrifice flies.
RiverDogs starter Brett Smith, in his first start of the season for the 'Dogs, held the Jackets without a hit until the fifth. It was the only hit he allowed, but Smith gave up two runs with the help of four walks, three GreenJackets stolen bases and a pair of wild pitches. Smith fanned two in his 2009 RiverDogs debut.
Mike Loree took the GreenJackets into the sixth, scattering ten hits through 6.1 innings and allowing two runs without a walk while striking out three. Edwin Quirarte (4-1) came on to retire all eight hitters he faced, stranding two inherited runners in the seventh, to get the win in a 2.2 inning stint with one strikeout.
The GreenJackets will try to take four of five from the last place RiverDogs with lefty Aaron King (5-5, 3.56) on the hill in the series and homestand finale. He'll face Cory Arbiso (4¬-7, 3.42) as the GreenJackets celebrate the birthday of their beloved mascot Auggie with several of his mascot friends in attendance. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
