AZL Giants vs. AZL Angels
The Angels forced this one-game playoff with a 1-0, 12-inning victory over the Giants on Saturday night. John Rickard, a 2008 38th-round Draft pick, singled home pinch-runner Heath Nichols to end the marathon.
Former sixth-round pick Josh Blanco struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief but will be unavailable for the semifinal.
The Angels feature an impressive blend of pitching and offense. They led the league with a 3.16 ERA, .287 batting average and 391 runs scored and boast three Arizona League All-Stars in shortstop Rolando Gomez (.304, two homers, 19 RBIs), outfielder Mike Trout (.360, 1, 25) and designated hitter Eric Oliver (.274, 4, 35).
Right-hander Cameron Lamb (3-1, 2.24, 49 strikeouts) is the Giants' lone All-Star, but the team from Scottsdale ranked second in the 11-team league with a 3.39 ERA, third with 321 runs scored and fourth with a .272 batting average.
Awaiting the winner are the Mariners, who won both halves in the West Division, although the East representative will have host Monday's Championship Game.
