I'm in the press box at Beloit as I write this.
There are less than sixty minutes before the final game of the season starts
and just over 30 minutes before the pre-game show starts. Plus, I'm
about 15 minutes away from my pre-game hamburger..okay double
cheeseburger...you caught me. So, out of necessity this will be a short
column.
Here it is. The end of the season. The
last game of the year. This is not a sudden end like the last episode of
The Sopranos. The thing about sports is that you know exactly when the
final regular season is going to happen. This gives you time to prepare,
but I am still shocked the last game is here.
Look at the 2010 schedule. I know that the
Timber Rattlers final game of next season is scheduled for Kane County on
Monday, September 6. And when that date rolls around in 2010, I will be
just as unprepared for the regular season to end and just as ready for the
2011 season to begin.
That might not make a lot of sense. But, it
does in a Nick Nolte in Mulholland Falls way. His character gets off a
line that goes something like, "I don't need to find you. I've
already found you."
I didn't really understand it when I first saw the
movie, but now I do.
Today isn't really the end of the season.
It's the start of next season. And I can't wait. Hopefully,
neither can you.
