After two outstanding pitching performances to start the season, the Express were able to get to the Z's starting pitching throughout the game. Zephyrs starter Brian Lawrence lasted five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. Lawrence, who took the loss, gave way in the sixth inning for reliever Chris Schroder.
In his first appearance of the year, Schroder allowed four runs in one inning of work, allowing four hits and one walk. Also for the Z's, Jay Buente and Chris Leroux combined for three scoreless innings of work, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out five.
Zephyrs shortstop Donnie Murphy went 2-for-4 on the evening, and has now hit safely in each of the team's first three games this season.
Four Round Rock pitchers combined for the shutout, Express starter Andy Van Hekken pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five. The foursome combined to hold the Zephyrs to the minimum number of batters over the final four frames.
The Express offense was fueled by center fielder Jason Bourgeois who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Brian Bogusevic added a 3-for-5 night at the plate including two RBI and a run scored.
The two teams will complete the four-game tilt tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm from Zephyr Field.
