CLEARWATER, Fla. - A big night at the plate fueled an 8-4 victory for the Clearwater Threshers over the Brevard County Manatees at Bright House Field. The eight runs were the most scored by Clearwater since May 28 as the team finished with nine hits.
Harold Garcia led the charge with a two-for-four night that included three RBI. The second baseman extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a fourth inning bunt single. Then in the seventh with the Threshers up 5-2, he stroked a three-run double to right but was thrown out trying to reach third.
The runs were plenty for starter Trevor May (4-5) who earned his fourth win of the year with a seven-strikeout performance. May worked five and a third innings and surrendered just one run on two hits. He was followed by Jon Velasquez, Edgar Garcia, and Korey Noles to finish the win.
Clearwater got on the board in the first inning when Derrick Mitchell singled home Anthony Gose. Gose reached on a single to extend his hit streak to 12 games.
The Threshers got a run in the fifth on Joel Naughton's sacrifice fly and two more runs in the sixth when Darin Ruf clubbed his third home run of the year.
Phillies' shortstop Jimmy Rollins made the start for Clearwater as part of a Major League rehab assignment and went hitless in three plate appearances.
Clearwater will go for the sweep Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as Jesus Sanchez (5-4) takes on Dan Merklinger (3-1). Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for fans who wish to attend the weekly happy hour hosted at Frenchy's Tiki Pavilion in left field.
