Braves prospect Arodys Vizcaino, traded over the winter from the Yankees for Javier Vazquez, was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a right elbow strain.

The Dominican right-hander will miss six weeks after he was flown to Atlanta for an MRI exam, which revealed late Wednesday night a partial tear in his throwing elbow, according to multiple reports.

Vizcaino is not expected to undergo surgery and will most likely begin rehabbing the injury at the Braves' Spring Training complex in Florida once he's pain free.

The 19-year-old had a 4.63 ERA in three starts for Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach after impressing early on at Class A Rome, where he won nine of his 12 starts for the Braves.

Vizcaino last pitched on June 25, striking out four over five innings in a no-decision against Potomac. He reported a sore arm after the game, and the Braves opted to shut him down Wednesday following the exam.

The righty was dealt by the Yankees along with outfielder Melky Cabrera and relief pitcher Mike Dunn to Atlanta in December when New York reacquired the veteran Vazquez along with left-handed reliever Boone Logan. The Braves sent him to Rome, where he went 9-3 with a 2.34 ERA in a dozen starts, striking out 66 in 69 1/3 innings. He was considered one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects prior to the deal.
