Rice will join teammates Ray Chang, Nate Spears, and Fife at the Eastern League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 14th at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Rice has been as reliable an arm as they come out of the bullpen this season with the Portland Sea Dogs. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.90 ERA this season, and is tied for the team lead in saves with nine. He has converted all nine save opportunities this season. Rice leads the team with 27 appearances, in which he has struck out 36 batters in 31.0 innings pitched. A native of San Bernardino, California, Rice was acquired by the Red Sox in the Triple-A phase of the 2008 Rule 5 Draft. Last season, he made his organizational debut with Single-A Salem and led the team with 94 strikeouts, while ranking among Carolina League relief leaders in opponent average (2nd, .160), strikeouts per 9.0 innings (2nd, 12.09), and fewest base runners per 9.0 innings (3rd, 10.67).
Other changes to the Eastern Division All-Star roster as announced by the Eastern League include; D.J. Mitchell (Trenton) will be added to the roster in place of David Phelps (Trenton) who is being promoted to Triple-A and Freddy Galvis (Reading) will be added to the roster in place of Luis Hernandez (Binghamton) who is also being promoted to Triple-A.
The All-Star Game will feature the Eastern Division All-Stars against the Western Division All-Stars. Each team will consist of 24 players. The All-Star teams were selected through fan voting along with selections from media personnel, club field personnel, and Eastern League administrators. Each Eastern League team has at least three players, including at least one pitcher and one position player.
