On Wednesday, August 4, Greg "The Bull" Luzinski, one of the all-time greats in Reading Phillies and Philadelphia Phillies history, and the Phillie Phanatic, one of the most beloved mascots in the history of sports, will return to America's Classic Ballpark to meet, greet, and entertain fans during the R-Phils 7:05 p.m. contest against the Trenton Thunder.
Tickets for Wednesday's game are still available and can be purchased in-person at FirstEnergy Stadium, by calling (610) 375-8469, or online at readingphillies.com. Food court gates open at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and fans can enjoy an exciting 90-minute pre-game concert in the Classic Café by The Neo Trio.
Luzinski, a four-time Major League Baseball All-Star, was a key member of the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies World Series championship team. "The Bull" had two game-winning hits in the 1980 National League Series, including a game-winning home run in game 1. For his career, Luzinski hit a solid .276 with 307 home runs and 1,128 RBIs.
Before "The Bull" was launching home runs for the Philadelphia Phillies, however, the former first round pick was launching home runs in the Minors - including a successful stint with the R-Phils in 1970. At the young age of 19, Luzinski hit an impressive .325 with 33 home runs and 120 RBIs for the 78-63 R-Phils. He led the club in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks, and total bases, in his only season in Baseballtown.
A member of the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame, Luzinski will throw out a ceremonial first pitch and also address the crowd on-hand at America's Classic Ballpark. "The Bull" will then sign free autographs for fans beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the food court. Fans can also purchase 8x10 photos for only $5 and have them autographed by the former Phillies great. Luzinski, who opened "Bull's Barbecue" at Citizen's Bank Park, will also be selling his very popular barbecue sauce "The Bull BBQ Sauce".
Along with Luzinski, The World Famous Phillie Phanatic will make his third and final appearance at FirstEnergy Stadium on Wednesday, thanks to Empire Beauty Schools. The Phanatic, who debuted on April 25, 1978 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, has been entertaining fans for over thirty years, and will bring his exciting show to Baseballtown for one more time in 2010.
Wednesday's game is also a 4 for $48 Family Night, and fans can get four yellow box seat tickets, four sodas, four hot dogs, and the opportunity to play catch on the field before the 7:05 p.m. contest, thanks to Capital BlueCross. Also, families can take advantage of a $16 Family Night at the Pool, which features a two and a half hour buffet at a poolside picnic table and a visit from a Reading Phillies player, courtesy of the Reading Eagle.
