(Eastlake, OH)- Lake County pitchers combined to toss nine innings of no-hit baseball defeating Dayton 3-1 on Monday night at Classic Park in the home opener. Trey Haley, Francisco Jimenez and Clayton Ehlert made history in northeast Ohio and now share something special with the late great Bob Feller; throwing a no-hitter in a home opener.
The Captains scored the first for the fifth straight game. In the second inning, Jason Smit drew a leadoff walk and came into score on Alex Monsalve's RBI double. Dayton scored their lone run in the third inning using two walks and two wild pitches against starter Haley to make 1-1.
In the fifth inning, Carlos Moncrief doubled with one out to reach, a Giovanny Urshela ground out moved him to third. Moncrief scored on Daniel Renken wild pitch to make it 2-1. Tyler Cannon hit the Captains' first homerun of the season to give the Captains a little insurance, at 3-1.
The real fireworks came on the mound, Haley started the night working three innings, allowing a run with no hits, walking two and striking out four. Jimenez (1-0) earned the win pitching four scoreless innings allowing just one walk and striking out two. Clayton Ehlert picked up the save, his second tossing a perfect eighth and ninth inning to seal the no-hit bid.
Dragons' starter Renken (0-1) took the loss going five innings allowing three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Lake County and Dayton continue their four game series from Classic Park on Tuesday night at 7:00PM. Captains' opening day starter RHP Mike Goodnight (1-0) will make his second start of the season against RHP Josh Smith (0-1) for the Dragons.
Tuesday night is the first Bark in the Park night, presented by Marc's Doggie Rewards where fans can bring their canine friends to Classic Park. Every Tuesday home game will be a Bark in the Park night. Dog owners can purchase $5 pooch passes, from which a portion of the proceeds will benefit Marc's Doggie Rewards. The Captains will offer $1 hot dogs on Tuesday nights as well to complete the dog theme.
