Two-Out Runs Prove Fatal in Tides 9-1 Loss
05/05/2011 11:39 PM ET
The Norfolk Tides had trouble closing out innings Thursday night at Harbor Park and it cost them to the tune of a 9-1 loss to the Indianapolis Indians in front of 4,006 fans.

Matt Hague put the visitors on the board with a two-out, two-run homer in the first inning, and it proved to be a sign of things to come as the Indians (9-19) scored seven two-out runs in their blowout victory. Chase d'Arnaud gave the Indianapolis ballclub a 5-0 lead in the second inning with a two-out, three-run homer off Tides starter Chris Jakubauskas.

Jakubauskas (0-1, 18.90) started in place of Ryan Drese after being optioned to Norfolk earlier in the day. The veteran righty lasted just 2+ innings and was relieved by Drese after giving up a leadoff single to Alex Presley in the third inning; Presley eventually scored on a groundout by Jason Jaramillo. In all, Jakubauskas allowed six runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Tides bats got off to a promising start against Indians starter Brian Burress. Ryan Adams and Nolan Reimold knocked back-to-back one-out singles and gave the home team a chance to cut into the early two-run deficit, but Brandon Snyder grounded into a double-play to end the inning. Burress (1-4, 5.34) allowed just one more Tides base runner to get into scoring position and gave up only four more hits during his 6.2 innings on the hill.

Nick Green got the Tides on the board with a solo home run in the seventh inning that made it 9-1 in favor of Indianapolis.

Dusty Brown added a solo home run of his own in the sixth inning off Drese.

Drese lasted 5.0 innings of relief, giving up three runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked one. Armando Gabino pitched 2.0 hitless innings to close out the game; he issued one walk and struck out three.

The two teams will meet again Friday night when it will be Teacher Appreciation Night at Harbor Park. Teachers from Hampton Roads can receive two reserved seat tickets for $5.00 or two box seat tickets for $6.50.

The Tides will send RH Rick VandenHurk (1-4, 7.03) to the hill opposite RH Sean Gallagher (0-4, 8.74) as they try to even up the series. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
