Senators fall in 11 innings to Richmond 6-3

Thursday night in Richmond, the Senators opened up their four-game series with Richmond with a walk-off loss, 6-3 in 11 innings. Johnny Monell hit a two-out three-run home run in the last of the 11th inning making a winner of the Flying Squirrels. With their fifth loss in their past seven games, the Senators fall to 16-17, a game under .500. Richmond improves to 16-18 with the win.

The story of the game was missed opportunities, for both teams. Harrisburg was 1 x 11 with runners in scoring position and Richmond was just 4 x 17 in the same situation. The teams combined to strand 14 runners in scoring position.

Chris Rahl had a big night for the Senators, going 4 x 4 and reaching base six times in total as he walked once and was hit once. Derek Norris had two hits and Tyler Moore hit his fifth home run on the season.

Carlos Martinez, Cory VanAllen, Hassan Pena, and Ryan Mattheus combined to pitch six innings and kept the Sens in the game. Mattheus took the tough luck loss giving up the game ending three-run home run. In the 10th though, Mattheus pitched around a lead-off, stranding the runner at third with two strikeouts to end the inning.

Left-hander Justin Dowdy pitched a scoreless inning to earn his fourth win on the season against no losses for Richmond.
