Rochester (17-25) struck early against Maya with two runs in the first. Ben Revere led off with a single in his return to Rochester after a stint in the major leagues. After a Ray Chang walk, Rene Tosoni singled home a run and Chang then scored on an Aaron Bates double-play ground out.
Syracuse (19-23) threatened in the fourth inning with a two-out rally against Red Wings starter Gibson. Tug Hulett and Jesus Flores singled and Corey Brown walked to load the bases for Adam Fox, but Gibson induced a groundout to shortstop to end the inning.
The Red Wings tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth inning against Maya and Jeff Mandel. Revere's RBI triple, Chang's RBI single, and Bates' RBI single pushed across the extra tallies to give Rochester some breathing room. Maya allowed six hits and four runs in seven and two-thirds innings, walking two and striking out seven.
The Chiefs go for the series win Tuesday afternoon at 11:05. Lefthander Ross Detwiler will throw for Syracuse against Rochester southpaw Scott Diamond.
