Colorado Springs mounted a seven-run comeback to take a late lead, but it was the Tucson Padres who made the final comeback, scoring twice in the ninth to beat the Sky Sox Saturday, 10-9. The wild game also saw the Padres complete two straight steals of home, with both Everth Cabrera and Luis Martinez accomplishing the feat while Sky Sox starter Edgar Gonzalez was on the mound. Cabrera's steal of home came in the first inning, and Martinez swiped home in the fourth. Both were the only runner on base at the time they stole home.
The Padres led 8-1 in the fourth inning when the Sky Sox began a seven-run comeback, culminating with a seven-run eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead. The
Padres used three pitchers in the 10 batter bottom of the eighth, surrendering a three-run home run by Mike Jacobs and a lead changing wild pitch in
Cabrera played for the first time since early May, he had been on the disabled list with a broken left hamate bone, and went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored atop the Padres lineup. Eric Patterson played in his first game with Tucson and went 1-for-5 with an RBI triple. The Padres used a season-high seven pitchers in the game, with Samuel Deduno coming in from the bullpen to make a spot start. Deduno pitched three innings, allowing one run, in his first start in the Padres organization.
The Padres have now beaten the Sky Sox seven times in 10 tries this season.
