Canzler Leads IL over PCL in 2011 All-Star Game
Hits and runs were tough to come by at Spring Mobile Ballpark, normally considered a hitters park. The second inning was the only breakthrough for the International League. Charlotte Knight Dayan Viciedo opened up the inning advancing to first base on an error by Bees third baseman Jeff Baisley. Following a fly out by Devin Mesoraco of Louisville, Matt Hague of Indianapolis walked to put men on first and second. Home Run Derby champion Stefan Gartrell lined out to bring Canzler to the plate, and he responded by hitting a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall to bring home the games only runs.
For his effort Canzler was named the IL's Top Star. Canzler finished 1-4 with three RBI. David Cooper of Las Vegas won the PCL Top Star Award.
The IL pitching staff combined for a three-hitter led by starter Zach McAllister of the Columbus Clippers. McAllister went two innings giving up just a single hit. Adam Warren of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Chris Schwinden of Buffalo, Tom Milone of Syracuse, Shane Lindsay of Charlotte, Chuck James of Rochester, Michael Schwimmer and Mike Zagurski of Lehigh Valley and Mark Worrell of Norfolk combined for the shutout for the IL.
The PCL made an attempt at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. The home team loaded the bases on walks by Aaron Cunningham of Tucson, Konrad Schmidt of Reno and Oklahoma City RedHawk J.B. Shuck, but was unable to cash in as Chuck James struck out Reno's Tony Abreu to retire the side.
Salt Lake's hometown favorites Gil Velazquez and Jeff Baisley struggled at the plate like most of the PCL team. Baisley started at third base and went 0-2 at the plate while committing a rare error at on a sharp ground ball to third. Velazquez replaced Baisley at third in the sixth inning and also went 0-2. Cyprus High School and College of Central Utah graduate Willie Eyre came in for the PCL in the bottom of the ninth inning and struck out the only batter he faced.
